Makeover for Hiking Basics Website

My hiking website has had a makeover. This was forced on me after eBay moved switched from Commission Junction to its own affiliate network. Because I’m resident in South Africa, eBay rejected my application to join its partner network.

So Hiking Basics, which was a BANS site promoting eBay products, is now powered by WordPress and will be showcasing products from independent merchants like Backcountry and Altrec.

The section on popular hiking gear, featuring products from Amazon.com, has been retained so visitors can still get a reliable pointer to what hiking products are selling well from Amazon’s site. Brief customer reviews and comments are included, which helps provide an unbiased viewpoint.

The hiking articles and hiking videos sections have also been retained on the revamped site.

More Hiking Videos

A number of additional hiking videos have been added to the Hiking Basics website. The videos include:

Top Selling Hiking & Camping Gear

Any product that’s selling well must be doing something right. Today’s consumers are “product savvy” and will soon reject gear that’s not up to scratch. This is particularly so in the Internet era with consumers sharing and exchanging information and opinions on numerous websites and blogs.

To find popular hiking and camping products that others are buying, have a look at Popular Hiking & Camping Gear on the Hiking Basics website. Items include backpacks, sleeping bags, boots, safety and first aid equipment, clothing, and camping lanterns.

Hiking Safety Videos

Hiking safety videos aim to ensure that those hitting the trail, whether for day hikes or longer treks, can enjoy safe and trouble-free hiking. Of course one should always remember that careful preparation is the key to hiking safety, while hikers should also know and understand the area and their gear.

The hiking safety videos, now added to the Hiking Basics website cover a number of specialist first aid skills like CPR (Cardio-pulminary Resuscitation) and ability to perform the Heimlich maneuver. Definitely worth viewing if you’re into hiking or other outdoor adventure.

Using a GPS for Hiking

GPS is an acronym for Global Positioning System. Though there are many components to the system, the essential elements are:

a) a series of satellites, and

b) the actual GPS units that people carry.

Three satellites are used to locate your position across the Earth’s surface and another can be used with them to calculate your altitude in a process called triangulation. GPS units come in an array of prices, with the higher priced models offering more features. Read the full article Using a GPS for Hiking

Hiking Backpack Guide

If you’re in the market to buy a backpack for hiking, you’ll be faced with so many choices that it’s helpful first to get a broad overview and then focus on important features that should influence your final decision.

The first point to consider is how much stuff you intend carrying. This to a large degree will be governed by how long you intend to hike and under what sort of conditions. Obviously, a single overnight stop where you can buy a meal calls for a different strategy from a week-long trek in remote wilderness.

Preparation is the Key to Safe Hiking

Careful preparation is the key to hiking safety, ensuring you have a safe and enjoyable hike. Below are five important guidelines to follow:

1. Know and understand the area and your gear. Become self reliant by learning about the terrain, conditions, local weather and your equipment before you start.

2. Leave your plans. Tell someone where you are going, the trails you are hiking, when you’ll return and your emergency plans.

A travel plan is a basically a list of the possible places you are going to cover during your hiking excursion. You can even just use a map and mark the places you’re going to be. That way, in case you do become lost, searchers will know the areas where they ought to concentrate their efforts.

3. Stay together. When you start as a group, hike as a group, end as a group. Pace your hike to the slowest person.

4. Be prepared to turn back. Weather changes quickly in the mountains. Fatigue and unexpected conditions can also affect your hike. Know your limitations and when to postpone your hike. The mountains will be there another day.

5. Be prepared for emergencies, even if you are hiking for just an hour. An injury, severe weather or a wrong turn could become life threatening. Don’t assume you will be rescued; know how to rescue yourself.
