Born in New York City on December 12, 1928, Frankenhaler launched her career in 1952 when she exhibited a large-scale work title Mountains and Sea. This painting, measuring 7 x 10 ft, is an example of a technique known as soak stain, in which the artist paints directly onto raw, unprepared canvas, causing the canvas to absorb the colors.
